East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service has issued a safety warning for all attendees. Due to the unique challenges presented by the large crowds and narrow streets of Lewes, they advise people who don't live in Lewes to enjoy the event from home. This year, six bonfire societies will hold processions through the town's streets from 20:00 GMT, each culminating in their own bonfire event and firework display.
For those unable to attend in person, Visit Lewes is offering a solution with a livestream of the processions. This allows everyone to enjoy the spectacle from the comfort of their own homes, ensuring no one misses out on the action.
However, if you're planning to attend, be prepared for road closures and parking restrictions. Starting from 16:45 on Tuesday, several roads in and around Lewes will be closed, including key junctions on the A27, A275, C7, and A26. On-street parking will also be suspended on certain streets from midday. The roads are expected to reopen around 02:00 on Wednesday, once Sussex Police deem it safe.
Public transport will also be affected. Buses will run, but many will be on diverted routes. Brighton and Hove Buses have promised extra staff at stations to assist passengers, but they also warn of potential delays. Trains will not stop at Lewes or nearby stations Falmer, Cooksbridge, Glynde, and Southease from 17:00.
Remember, safety is paramount. So, whether you're watching the processions from home or braving the cold to join the festivities, plan ahead, stay safe, and enjoy the unique spectacle that is Lewes Bonfire Night.
