The sisters' journey to pub ownership was an unexpected one. Hazel, having worked at another Shepherd Neame pub in Hastings, discovered The Hastings Arms was available. Susan, then head of security at Hatton Garden in London, had no prior pub experience. Still, the allure of a lifestyle change and the chance to be closer to their parents in Hastings was too tempting to resist.
Having grown up in Hastings and previously worked together at a manufacturing company, the sisters were no strangers to the area or each other's work styles. "As twin sisters, we have always been incredibly close and worked well as a team," Hazel shared.
Over the past 20 years, Susan and Hazel have transformed The Hastings Arms into a local favourite, renowned for their well-kept cask ales and mouth-watering menu of homemade pub classics. The pub's popular Tuesday Curry Nights and Tapas Thursdays have become a staple in the community.
The sisters' commitment to quality and customer satisfaction is evident. "We love meeting new people, and take real pride in ensuring that our food and drink is of the highest quality," said Hazel.
The family spirit of The Hastings Arms was further cemented when Susan's husband Steven joined the team as Head Chef. The couple's rescue Terriers, Bob and Buster, complete the pub's warm, family atmosphere.
Shepherd Neame’s Chief Executive Jonathan Neame recently visited the pub to celebrate their 20th anniversary, presenting the sisters with a commemorative plaque and a magnum of Champagne. He commended their hard work, dedication, and the fantastic menu created by Steven.
Open every day except Wednesday, The Hastings Arms continues to serve its community with superb food, drink, and a warm welcome, a testament to the sisters' 20 years of dedication and passion.
