Sussex wines have been earning accolades for their quality and distinctiveness, and now, they have achieved a new milestone. They have been officially recognised on the world wine map, a testament to the hard work and dedication of local winemakers. This recognition has put Sussex, quite literally, on the global wine map.
This achievement is no small feat. It is the result of years of careful cultivation, meticulous winemaking processes, and a deep respect for the land. The winemakers of Sussex have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to their craft, and their efforts have paid off in the most delightful way.
The wines of Sussex are known for their unique character and exceptional quality. From the crisp, refreshing whites to the robust, full-bodied reds, each bottle tells a story of the land and the people who have nurtured it. The region's cool climate and chalky soils create the perfect conditions for growing grapes that yield complex, flavourful wines.
But it's not just the quality of the wines that has earned Sussex a place on the world map. It's also the spirit of innovation that permeates the region's winemaking industry. Sussex winemakers are constantly experimenting with new techniques and varieties, pushing the boundaries of what's possible in English viticulture.
Mousehall in Wadhurst
This vineyard, once neglected and overgrown, has been transformed into a beacon of winemaking excellence, earning Sussex a well-deserved spot on the global wine map.
The tale of Mousehall began in 2017 when Gary and Kathy Jordan, owners of the esteemed Jordan Wine Estate in Stellenbosch, South Africa, stumbled upon the Medieval Mousehall Estate. Despite its dilapidated state, they saw potential in its verdant fields and decided to breathe new life into it. In 2019, together with their daughter, Christy, they planted their first Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vineyard.
Fast forward to today, and Mousehall has just released its first collection of still wines under the Tidebrook brand, named after the brook that runs through their estate. This collection includes a Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and rosé, each bottle a testament to the family's dedication and the rich terroir of Sussex.
But the journey doesn't stop there. The Jordans have converted an abandoned barn into a winery and distillery, one of the first of its kind in the UK, and launched a gin and vodka, further showcasing their innovative spirit.
Visitors to Mousehall can immerse themselves in the winemaking process with 90-minute distillery tours. Wine tours are also on the horizon, promising an even deeper dive into the world of Sussex wines. For those wishing to extend their stay, an 18th-century traditional oast house on the estate offers year-round accommodation.
The recognition of Sussex on the world wine map is a significant achievement, but it's just the beginning. With their passion for excellence and their commitment to sustainable practices, Sussex winemakers are poised to continue making waves in the global wine industry.
So, raise a glass to Sussex, a region that has proven that with dedication, creativity, and a love for the land, anything is possible. Here's to the winemakers who have put Sussex on the map, and to the delightful wines they create. Cheers!
